Mount Rushmore National Memorial (Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe)
Distance from Rapid City: 30 minutes (23 miles)
Towering above the pine-covered peaks of the Black Hills National Forest, four 60-foot presidential portraits emerge from granite in one of America’s most iconic landscapes. Just a scenic 30-minute drive from Rapid City, this legendary monument sits deep within the heart of the Black Hills, where winding roads, towering ponderosa pines, and larger-than-life stories create the kind of journey that stays with you long after you leave. As the region’s largest city, Rapid City serves as the perfect basecamp with convenient access to the memorial, alongside local restaurants, shopping, hotels, and the region’s closest commercial airport.
Long before the carving began, this mountain carried a different name and a deeper meaning. The Lakota people knew it as Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe, or Six Grandfathers. Lakota medicine man Nicholas Black Elk, the same spiritual leader honored at Black Elk Peak in Custer State Park, named the mountain after experiencing a powerful vision of the six sacred directions: north, south, east, west, the sky above, and the earth below. Together, these directions represented wisdom, strength, kindness, love, and the guidance passed down through generations, much like the steady presence of beloved grandfathers.
Today, a visit to Mount Rushmore is more than a photo opportunity. Wander the Avenue of Flags, step inside the Sculptor’s Studio to see how the monument came to life, explore the exhibits inside the Lincoln Borglum Museum, and stay for the Evening Lighting Ceremony honoring American veterans beneath the glow of the illuminated mountain. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, there is always another perspective, another story, and another unforgettable moment waiting beneath the gaze of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
